New BBC Three identity

New BBC Three Logo

I meant to post this yesterday, but now I see I’ve been beaten to the punch by Creative Review, it’s time to press the publish button.

Thee BBC continues it’s assault on it’s own logo repertoire and has decided that BBC Three are getting a new identity. Obviously that means a new logo and idents etc, but the exciting thing is that the plan is to make the channel the first truly multi-platform digital channel for content. This means the usual TV type malarky, but also lots of exciting web tricks and new ways to interact with the service. They’ve rather predictably roped Lily Allen in to be part of it (didn’t you know that Lily Allen has to be part of anything if you expect young people to take a night off from knifing each other and participate?)

I really liked the old logo, and the Aardman style creatures, but this new move is brave so has to be a good thing. The logo is a bit unremarkable, nice enough but nothing special, let’s see how it pans out. Interestingly, BBC incumbant Lambie Nairn weren’t part of it (not yoof enough) so Red Bee Media did the honours…

…still not a patch on the great BBC2 idents from the 90s.

Oh, and CR found a great montage clip of the Aardman blobbies in action – lest we forget…

I totally understand and admire BBC’s ambition to take the channel towards new media, but do they have to make such a trend whorish logotype?

This is going to date in about half an hours time. Who knows I may be eating my words when I see how it’s put to use. Channel 4 identities are setting the standards so far methinks…

Yes, Channel 4 are at the top of this game, and it’s interesting to note that their own logo has remained unchanged, having originally been something which did start to date very badly, to now being fresh again. They’ve had the confidence to stick with the logo and evolve the visual style around it. Their current stuff is just as trendy, but the difference is that once it starts to look old then they won’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water…

BBC Three is a slightly different beast, perhaps they are embracing changing the logo every few years, their audience does have a much shorter attention span.

Hang on a minute, I watch BBC Three…

That’s true. I’d say in a lot of ways BBC three is comparable to E4, who do some lovely playfully things with their logo. Will be interesting to see where this three can go, seems as if it’s going to rely quite heavily on animation, as the mark itself is quite weak?
