New UK coins unveiled

New coins

A new range of coins for the UK has been unveiled by the Royal Mint. It’s the first time a single design approach has been used across all the coins, and I must say I really like them. I like even more the fact that the designer is 26 year old Matthew Dent who won a competition in the national press. Nice one Matthew, they’re great, now you’ve got to top that sometime over the rest of your career…!

New coins arranged

The £1 coin shows the entire crest, parts of which are repeated over the other coins so that they unite when arranged together. Cue people in pubs up and down the country lining the coins up next to their beermats…

The new £20 was a great improvement a while ago too (even if it did see the sad loss of my home town Worcester from the note) so soon we should have some great design spread across all of our pocket money…

There’s an interesting interview with designer Matthew Dent, where he talka about the process of designing the coins here.
