Just for fun

Hugo Award

Hugo Award Logo

The prestigious Hugo Awards for science fiction have been handed out again for another year, but alongside the usual prizes there was another accolade up for grabs, namely that of designing the logo for the awards which have been running unbranded since 1955. Logos and science fiction? I just had to have a go…

My entry added movement to the mandatory static rocket. I wanted to create a striking mark which was clean and contemporary but rooted firmly in the past, something which could plausibly always have been their logo since the 50s. The essential contours of the rocket are repeated in an orbital atomic pattern to give the logo a seal of quality look. A nice bit of Futura type finished it all off.

The competition was to create something which would appear on books and DVDs etc, raising the profile of the awards and conveying the honour of being a nominee or winner. The trademarked Hugo rocket was a required element along with the wording.

I was quite pleased with the entry and thought I’d share it here, even though it sadly did not win. There were 390 entries in total from 24 different countries so the competition must have been pretty tough. Head over to the Hugo Awards site to see the winning entry.

Great quote from ‘moron’ in the comments on the winning entry:
“Why is your logo a goddamn rocket? You idiots. WTF? By the way I’m having a house building contest. Whoever builds me the best house gets 500 bucks. Awesome!”

Your logo looks totally great. I also was going to submit mine stamped in gold foil. Awesome execution on that. The winner… wtf?
