Just for today.

Word Clock

I wrote a little while ago about nine nicer ways to tell the time as I had noticed a few clever ways of your screensaver being used to display the time. Well I wish I had known then about Simon Heys’s Word Clock, which shows the time typographically and gives quite a bit of control over the display of the typography.

There’s also a Rotary Word Clock which is just as lovely, if not more so. Have a closer look by clicking the images above, then get over to the site and download the screensavers for PC and Mac. You can even get an iPhone version if you’ve been brave enough to jailbreak your device.

His portfolio is rather nice too…

Well, I got an iPhone 3G, and it seems I might have been the only one! I braved an extremely early morning and the bewildered stares of the morning commuters to stand in line at the Carphone Warehouse near work and pick one up. Shamefully I was first in line. There was quite a queue in the end and I left with my new phone just before the manager was about to explain to many of the customers that they wouldn’t be getting one. Apparently the store only had 10 phones. I think I left just in time, it was about to turn ugly.

Even people who were told they had one coming from O2 via courier as part of Monday’s preorder pantomime didn’t all actually get a phone in the end. Overall I think the launch was a bit of a mess. To top it all off , the credit check facilities crashed too which led to an anxious wait in line while I tried to wrack my brains and work out if I had made any reckless spending decisions recently…

Well, it all turned out OK, and I was only 10 minutes late for work. Early impressions are good, I’m having fun with it so far, but I’m off for a week’s holiday in Cornwall, so it will be getting an extensive field test. I’ll have a stab at a review when I get back…

iPhone 3G

Just spent the last hour or so listening to the WWDC keynote presentation by Steve Jobs and friends in which the iPhone 3G has finally been unveiled. The relief is palpable, although I’m a little disappointed that my frustration must endure another month of waiting and I won’t be able to buy myself one for my birthday. I deserve it.

Anyway, it looks good, most of the rumours were spot on, 3G, GPS, new casing and a lower price which could be around £100 in the UK. Bit disappointed that there is no front facing camera for iChat and that there’s no 32Gb model. The camera was glossed over too, still the unpopular 2 megapixel job. These may be updated in a revision for the Christmas market, but I’ve waited long enough, and the price is fantastic. I’m all over it like a rash on the 11th of July.

Can’t wait, the App Store is going to be great, the gaming potential is huge, and the new Mobile Me service which replaces .Mac might just be worth the money at last. I really do think it’s going to change my behaviour, and I’ll be very happy to ditch my current phone and finally get rid of Orange, who I’ve definitely fallen out of love with in recent years…

Spore & Monkey Ball on iPhone

Spore on iPhone

Today was the day that iPhone enthusiasts and would-be developers were waiting for as Apple unveiled the long-awaited Software Development Kit and outlined its plans for 3rd party software on the device.

Most notably for me were the demos of Will Wright’s eagerly anticipated Spore, and Sega’s Super Monkey Ball.

I’m going to find it REALLY hard to hold out for the iPhone v2 now…
