ASCII Rock

The retro geek in me loves ASCII art and especially in the form of video. Check out this site with some classic rock videos in ASCII format, not too sure about the sound though – squint away…

Lightwriting in London

Lightwriting in London by the Lichtfaktor crew. An amazing new technique achieved by setting the camera to long time exposure and writing with flash lights on the landscape.

Amazing!

Wildstyles at PYMCA

Flash

Went to the opening of ‘Wildstyles’ at the PYMCA gallery last night. Some cool photos, and some impromptu performances too, not to mention free beer. You might not get the performance or the alcohol now, but the photos are still worth a look, it’s on until the 2nd of November.

MP3 with a retro flavour

MP3 Cassette

I love my obsolete formats, so I thought this MP3 player in the shape of an old cassette tape was fantastic. It takes an SD card loaded with MP3s, but the best thing is you can also put it in a cassette player and listen to the contents! Technology coming full circle…

No Cover Art

Hard-Fi - No Cover Art

Hard-Fi’s new album Once Upon a Time in The West is due to come out soon and it’s caused a bit of a stir due to it’s cover design – some people are even calling it the worst of all time…

To be honest, I like it, and I quite like the reference to the digital age, even though most people seem to be finding it a bit lazy, and I like how it is being continued through the single releases. I like it, but then again I’m a graphic designer and a sucker for simple type and colour like this. (In blue it could almost be “Holster®: the album”, which in turn could almost be “Grafik: the website” etc etc. The ubiquity of Avantgarde-esque typefaces in graphic design circles does seem to be getting very pronounced. I still remember getting repeatedly told off at art college for trying to use Futura all the time, but I digress…

…hope the album’s good…

BBC Radio logos redesigned

BBC Radio Logos

London agency Fallon has redesigned the suite of BBC Radio logos, old and new comparison above.

I think they’re a definite improvement, much more consistent, and I’m all about consistency! I guess it’s strange that some are plain numbers, while others have a small detail indicative of the station content such as the smile in the 7. I would have thought it would be best to either do this on all of them or none, but hey, greater minds than mine were presumably at work…

Also, check out some of the oldies…
