Brown toast

This made me laugh. From The Independent’s Dave Brown.

Although, if Gordon Brown is toast, David Cameron is crackers.

(Maybe that makes Nick Clegg marmalade?)

International readers: If you don’t know what this is all about, it’s now known as ‘Bigotgate’

Nobody should have to put up with that at work, politics is a dirty business…

Graphic design behind bars

Alcatraz Bars

There was an article in the Sunday Times today about the idea of allowing prison inmates to work while they’re inside and earn up to £10,000 a year to spend on porn mags and cigarettes. Oh, and they’re doing graphic design.

Yes, apparently the evil criminal mind is particularly suited to grasping the intricacies of kerning and layout, with serial bigamists displaying a penchant for logo creation and international money launderers finding that they are adept at matching to a Pantone swatch. There is a well-meaning graphic design company called Barbed which recruits prisoners as designers – After they’ve got their certificate from Shillington College of course:

Prisoners have all undergone an intensive four month training programme and will be taking apprenticeships and other work-related qualifications, so standards will be as high (if not higher) than work on the outside.

I didn’t realise they’d seen my portfolio. And the best part? Their income is tax free, not to mention the free room and board they’re getting. On the other hand doing the graphic design for KFC could be seen as a punishment in itself, client meetings are a bit awkward and they have to take an armed escort on press…

Obama is a Mac, Clinton is a PC

Obama is a Mac, Clinton is a PC

Please forgive me while I write about politics. Don’t worry, I’ll get to design by the end of the post…

So today is Super Tuesday, Americans and UK news correspondents alike are getting more and more frantic about it all (just imagine the US media taking such an interest in our own quaint elections) and the spotlight is on the two Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. I don’t even know why I’m typing this, as I can imagine that anyone reading this post wouldn’t already know what they both had for breakfast this morning. Anyway, it’s a win win situation, Obama would be the first black president, Clinton would be the first female president. Both are several steps further along the evolutionary chain than George Bush…

The two are neck and neck, it’s too close to call. With almost identical policies, it’s a race being fought on personality, but perhaps the most striking difference between the two candidates is that according to the New York Times one is a Mac, and the other is a PC…

This comes from Obama’s visual style being seen as fresh and uncluttered, while Clinton shows a tendancy towards the generic way of doing things:
