Read at work

This is genius, a site which looks exactly like Microsoft Windows XP, so you can read other stuff while you’re at work. Choose from short stories, poetry, classics etc, all called up in a faux PowerPoint window. I think this is the only time I have been able to forgive a website for forcing fullscreen mode on me. Found through the very nice Very Short List

No good for Mac workplaces though. If slightly less cultured vintage games are your thing, check out The Macintosh Garden or the Little Green Desktop for similar GUI lookalikes.

Has anyone seen any other sites which look like operating systems?

Cinematypography

I’d noticed a few lovely classic film title screens cropping up on Ffffound! in recent weeks, then all of a sudden I stumble across this website, an archive of great (and not so great) film title screens lovingly compiled over a number of years by Steven Hill.

I could spend hours looking through these, the old ones are particularly lovely. Reminds me of watching classic afternoon films staying at my Nan’s house when I was little. No, we didn’t watch Battle Royale!

Thanks to Sean for the link…

We ffffound! it

If you never managed to get an invite to Ffffound!, then try I ? IT which is open to all. I haven’t played with it much but it appears to be much the same, even with a lot of the same graphics and ladies, although it brings in tagging and more of a social networking aspect. I’m not sure if I like that, I felt quite liberated by Ffffound!, not having to slavishly tag everything, but at least with I ? IT you’ve got a half decent chance of finding something again in the future…

The Rather Dificult Font Game

Test out your typographic recognition skills with The Rather Difficult Font Game which is doing the rounds at the moment. It’s nicely done and worth a look.

Before you ask, I got 27 out of 34 which I guess isn’t bad, although the leaderboard doesn’t even extend that far. I’ve replayed it since and its easy to get them all once you’ve got into the groove, but it’s that first score that counts!

Flickr gets video

Flickr Video

Yes that’s right, the rumours have been proved true, Flickr now does video. At the moment it’s for Pro users only but someone at Flickr has obviously decided they can give YouTube a run for their money. Let’s hope the quality stays high and it becomes a source of interesting footage rather than Jackass style japes and high school student miming…

Secrets on a postcard

Cat postcard

This one has been in my links for a while, but I was just reminded of it today and then I loved the postcard above so I thought I’d post it.

PostSecret is an ongoing open project where people send in their secret thoughts on the back of a self decorated postcard. Check them all out here, and if you’re feeling brave (you’re safe – it’s anonymous), send in one of your own…
